A subscriber asks when she should divide her daylilies:
ANSWER:
The best time would be late September (or next Spring). The thing about them is that you should try to get the new plants into the ground as soon as possible.
Cut off the existing leaves to about 6″ and plant so the crowns are about 1″ deep. Water and mulch.
They do tend to sulk a bit, so you might not get great flowers next year, but they’re tough little devils and generally bounce back wonderfully in the end.
