Carol T. asked us, “How can I store all the carrots I grew this summer so they last throughout the winter?”
Jennifer answers:
To store your carrots over the winter, you need to keep them dry, dark and cool. You can store your carrots in a cardboard box or tote in layers of sawdust, sand, peat moss, vermiculite, or anything ‘dry’. I use shredded paper from my office and it works great.
Keep them in a basement or garage where it is cool and dark. A key thing I’ve learned is to cut off the greens (obviously) but then make sure to cut about 1/8” off that end with the greens. If they have even a smidge of green, they’ll rot much more quickly.

I like to know the plastic containers work, especially with shredded paper, wow! If you have a cellar, or non heated basement, a wooden box/now plastic container of sand works well. That’s an old trick Hughie Fraser, ( ❤️) taught me years ago.
